Fatbikes on public roads

fatbike legaal

Is a fatbike legal? Definitely. But what is important is the speed of the fatbike. In addition, of course, whether or not you are on the public road. We are happy to explain everything about the legality of the fatbike.

Popular and legal

The electric fatbike is becoming increasingly popular. But just like with the electric scooter, the big question is, are they actually legal on the road? Many people do not know exactly what the regulations are for this. That is why we are going to tell you exactly when your electric fatbike is 100% legal on the public road. But also with which adjustments your bike is considered illegal.

What does the law say about the electric fat bike?

Actually, the rules around fatbikes are quite clear. Your fatbike can be legally ridden on public roads provided it meets a number of requirements:

  • The motor must not have a power exceeding 250 Watts
  • The fat bike may not have a throttle
  • The fat bike must be limited to a maximum speed of 25 km/h

When you put it all together like this, it probably seems simpler than you thought. These rules are intended to keep riding a fatbike safe. Do you have an electric fatbike that does not meet these three rules? Then there is a chance that your insurance will not pay out in the event of an accident! An electric fat bike with a throttle, is that allowed?

We can answer this question very quickly: no, that is not allowed. In fact, as soon as you mount a throttle on your fat bike, it is no longer legally allowed on public roads. Not even if this bike without a throttle was suitable for use on public roads.

When an electric bike only has pedal assistance, it falls under the legislation for bicycles. As soon as you put a throttle on it, it legally becomes a moped. And that means different rules. For example, you have to have a license plate, wear a helmet and have different insurance.

Installing a throttle on your fatbike is also considered tuning it. This not only risks a hefty fine, but also insurance problems. Your insurance may refuse to pay out if you drive damage with a tuned bike. You can read more about this in this blog .
