Tuning Fatbike

Fatbike opvoeren

Can you tune a fat bike ? In some cases, tuning a fat bike is no problem at all.

Some fatbikes are even made in such a way that you can tune them. Sometimes even by entering a simple code.

We are happy to tell you everything about tuning a fat bike .

Extra speed for the fat bike

We all want to find some extra excitement and sensation in the form of extra speed. With an electric fat bike this is made very easy for you. It sounds so small, just mount a throttle and your legal fat bike can suddenly go a lot faster. But in practice it is not that simple. Tuning up your fat bike can have serious consequences for you and your wallet. In this blog we explain why tuning up your electric bike is not recommended.

Why tuning your fat bike is not recommended

Tuning your fatbike is strongly discouraged in the Netherlands. And rightly so, because with that small adjustment your fatbike is immediately no longer street legal. According to the Dutch legislation an electric fat bike may not have a throttle. This legislation also applies to E-cargo bikes and therefore to all bikes in the Dailyride range. This has everything to do with the deliberately set maximum speed of fat bikes for safety reasons.

In addition, tuning your fatbike causes extra and unnecessary wear and tear on your bike. You endanger yourself and other road users and the icing on the cake is that your insurance does not cover you. All consequences that you probably do not want if you want to go cruising with your E-bike.

What are the consequences of tuning your fat bike?

Besides the legal consequences and the safety risks, there are plenty of other reasons why tuning your fatbike is not recommended. First of all, tuning your fatbike can lead to damage to the engine and other essential parts. Repairing and replacing them can be quite expensive.

The lifespan of the battery will also be shortened considerably because the battery is overloaded. A fatbike battery quickly costs €350,- and in general we want to get the most out of our batteries. We have some tips for that in this blog !

How high is the fine for tuning your electric bicycle?

The fine for this is currently a whopping €290. And riding with a throttle is pretty easy for an officer to spot. The fine will probably only increase next year to further discourage tuning your fatbike. Moreover, the maximum speeds are being lowered in more and more cities. For example in Amsterdam and Rotterdam where you are not allowed to drive faster than 30 km/h with your electric bike. That means that on top of that €290, you could also get a fine for speeding within built-up areas.

Tuning your fat bike and your insurance

The police are not the only thing you have to take into account with a tuned E-bike. If you cause an accident with a tuned electric bike, your insurance company can refuse to pay out. Which is understandable because by making the adjustment, you have actually turned your bike into a scooter that you ride without a helmet.

Conclusion

In short, is tuning your fatbike fun? Maybe. But is it worth it? We certainly don't think so. Both with a view to safety for yourself and others, but also all the additional costs due to wear and tear on your bike. Of course we would like to sell you parts, but we would much rather do that because you make a lot of safe kilometers with your fatbike!
